Referencing: Generative AI - Evaluating Information & Acknowledging Use

If you use generative AI tools during your studies at ECU, you are responsible for acting with integrity and in accordance with ECU's Academic Integrity policy,

Acting with academic integrity includes, but is not limited to: 

• Ensuring assignment submissions are your own work.
• Acknowledging your use of generative AI for assignments.
• Applying academic referencing conventions to acknowledge the owner, author, creator or source of the work.
• Using information or media according to copyright and privacy laws. 
• Acting ethically or doing the 'right thing', even when you are facing difficulties.

You are responsible for:

• Your ethical and honest use of generative AI.
• Checking gen AI output information is accurate and verifying it against authored sources.
• Citing / referencing authored sources that support your assignment content 
• Checking the sources in your Reference list are real and correspond to your assignment content.
• Demonstrating academic integrity.

Remember:

• Generative AI is a tool - the output generated is NOT a source of information.
• You must find credible (scholarly or non-scholarly) sources to reference in your assignments.

If you use any gen AI tools, include an acknowledgement as a written statement at the end of your assignment, above your reference list.

Be as specific as possible, and always include:

1. Which tools you used (and the version number).
2. How you used the tools.

Follow this format:

I acknowledge the use of [Gen AI program] (version) [how you specifically used it in your assignment].

Example acknowledgements of use:

I acknowledge the use of Copilot (Enterprise version) to brainstorm ideas.

I used Grammarly (free version) to review and edit my written language structure.​
