(archived) A Researchers' Companion: Research Impact & engagement

The Researchers Companion has been designed to answer the questions researchers ask at every step of the research life cycle

ARC and Research Impact

Australian Research Council

Research Engagement
Research engagement is the interaction between researchers and research end-users outside of academia, for the mutually beneficial transfer of knowledge, technologies, methods or resources.

Take the opportunity to build in public engagement strategies and opportunities from the start of a research project.

Research Impact
Research impact is the contribution that research makes to the economy, society, environment or culture, beyond the contribution to academic research.

Elements of Research Impact

Elements of Research Impact

The INORMS Rise Working Group define impact as " Impact is the changes we can see (demonstrate, measure, capture), beyond academia (in society, economy, environment) which happen because of our research (caused by, contributed to, attributable to)."

         This would include:

  • communicating and sharing your findings (eg. academic and non-academic, open access, open data, marketing, social media/digital footprint)
  •  engaging with stakeholders  (eg. facilitating meetings/workshops, testimonials, etc.)
  •  planning your research impact
  •  assessing your research impact
  • others (eg. working to get your research into policy documents)
