Accessing GenAI with MS Copilot
ECU Students and Staff now have access to Microsoft Copilot via the Edge browser (or Bing app) when using their ECU login details.
Microsoft Copilot is based on GPT 4 and can be used in many of the same ways as ChatGPT and also includes up-to-date Web search capabilities.
Copilot is a great way to safely explore the capabilities of GenAI. Whilst Copilot is a freely available service that is built into the Edge browser or available as a part of the standalone Bing app, with your ECU account you have further advantages. When you log in to Edge or the Bing app with your ECU account you will be protected in these important ways when using Copilot:
- Your prompts and data will not be leaked outside of ECU - so your intellectual property remains safe
- Your queries will not be used to train the underlying large language model
- No history is retained of your queries or the responses
- No reporting or auditing capability is provided
You will also have priority access to the more powerful GenAI models, where a free user may be limited.
Accessing MS Copilot
Use MS Copilot in Edge
- Download and install Microsoft Edge from your App Store or Web browser of choice (visit the Microsoft Edge webpage)
- Make sure you are logged in as an ECU user. Look for a briefcase on the icon in your taskbar, or look for your profile details in the top right corner or via the Settings menu
- If you are not logged in, follow the prompts to log in with your ECU account
- Click on the Bing Chat Enterprise icon in the top right corner of the browser
- Now you will see a side panel with options to Chat or Compose
- If you choose to Chat, then pick a conversation style
- Type a prompt into the box at the bottom of the screen. You can dictate the prompt and you can add an image as extra context or input
Use Microsoft Copilot without Edge
If you prefer to use a different browser, you have a couple of options:
- Go to https://copilot.microsoft.com/ and log in with your ECU account.
OR
- Install the Bing app on your device from the app store of your choice. Once installed, log into the app with your ECU account to benefit from protected use.
