Curiosity Studio - Mount Lawley: Home

Mount Lawley Library's creative learning space, the Curiosity Studio brings together students, researchers, and staff from diverse disciplines of study, to collaborate, explore, and experiment.

Expanding upon the traditional "Makerspace," the Studio focuses on providing the ECU community access to new and emerging technologies including 3D-printing, robotics, and virtual reality. Whilst the space does contain some elements of a traditional Makerspace or "Fab Lab," such as a badge maker, its main focus is to bring together people of different backgrounds to find innovative solutions to the unique challenges of disruptive technologies and modern life. As such, the Curiosity Studio will continue to expand and adapt as the technological landscape continues to change in the future.

The Studio helps students to engage with the University’s goal of encouraging enhanced, transformative learning experiences, and providing opportunities to improve learning outcomes and career readiness.

Please drop-in, book the space, and check out a piece of our technology.

Opening Hours

The Curiosity Studio is open during core Library service hours for drop-in use, and time for specialised services may also be booked in advance.

Most of our equipment can be checked out on your Library / Student Card, so drop-in and play!

If you want to guarantee access to the equipment (and beat the rush) check out our Booking page.

Our more specialised equipment (like our UP Box 3D Printers require some training. Once you have proven your competence on a piece of equipment, however, you will be able to access that technology at your leisure whenever the Library is open.

Ground Rules

General House Rules:

  1. Do not be on fire!
  2. Learn by doing and have fun

Nobody can teach you everything you need to know. You have to take charge of your own learning. You can’t get it right without getting it wrong, and things do not always work the first time.

We also learn and work best if we enjoy what we are doing.

  1. Safety is everyone’s responsibility

Keep this in mind at all times.

Stop and report any dangerous activity or accident within the Studio. Accidents, near misses and possible health and safety issues no matter how small must be reported to Library Staff ASAP.

  1. If you don’t know: ASK!

Safety is important if you are unsure of how to safely do something, ask.

  1. Keep it clean and tidy

All members are expected to maintain a safe and clean environment at all times.

  1. Don't be abusive to any person.

You may be asked to leave or may even be banned from the space.

Finally, please ensure you follow the University Rules, By-Laws and Statutes, the Acceptable use of Information systems, and related policies regarding computer, gaming, and 3D Printer usage.
