AI in ECU Research: Proportionality

When we discuss the aspect of proportionality in the use of AI in research, we are referring to:

  • balancing benefits and risks, evaluating both risks and harms alongside potential benefits, ensuring that no single factor (e.g., privacy vs. efficiency) is disproportionately prioritised.
  • measuring proportions in AI use, evaluating if AI tools are suitable for the task, assessing if AI-generated results are reliable and accurate, ensuring AI’s impact aligns with the goals and integrity of the work.
  • ethical considerations: Privacy, Security, and Fairness.
  • authorship & ownership in AI contributions:  Who is the true author? You or the AI?

Whose discovery is it?   Yours or AI's?

Ensure that the use of AI is justified, ethical, and beneficial.

Measure proportions. AI should be a supportive tool, not a replacement

There are no absolute rules—AI’s contribution depends on:

  • The originality of the human input (prompt).
  • The extent of editing and modification.
  • The impact of AI on the final output.
